The FANATICON Map is Here!

image

Good news! We’ve just uploaded the map/floor plan of the FANATICON convention space at the Asheville Art Museum. If you’ve ever been to the museum (or even if you haven’t), you know it’s a beautiful space with a really nice flow.

The museum itself is located in Asheville’s historic Pack Place, right on the corner of Broadway and Patton, one of Asheville’s busiest intersections for foot traffic. We’re anticipating a big crowd!

You can check out the floor plan on the Artists and Exhibitors registration pages or by clicking here. The map also features links to learn more about each of the exhibitors. We’ll be updating the map as more exhibitors sign up for the show. Stay tuned!

FANATICON Comic of the Week: Captain America Reborn #4

image

Okay, I see where they’re going with this. And I like it. In comics, superheroes are killed, then brought back to life all the time. But what if one gets brought back only to serve as a vessel for his arch enemy? That brings with it all sorts of problems. All his friends will certainly be happy he’s alive, but will then have to fight and possibly kill him again. It’s a very promising idea. Also, the artwork in this title has been gorgeous. There’s so much energy and action in Butch Guice’s work, especially the flashbacks to Captain America‘s historical adventures, they practically tremble on the page. If you haven’t been reading this, pick up an issue and study some of the WWII battle scenes. Great details and sense of movement.

You can pick up Captain America Reborn #4 and all the latest comics titles at your local Asheville and WNC comic book retailers!

FANATICON Comic of the Week: Blackest Night #4

image

DC’s Blackest Night titles and tie-ins are at their best when the heroes stop punching the superzombies and actually start working together and figuring stuff out. Barry Allen, the Flash, (who was recently re-animated himself) really shines in this issue, pulling the good guys together and ordering them to step up, suit up and start acting like the heroes they were born to be. He tells Mera (Aquaman’s widow) and the Atom that, for the time being, they should think of themselves as Wonder Woman and Superman and go save the day. Shortly after that, we get the best exchange I’ve read in comics in a long time:

Mera: If I’m Wonder Woman and you’re Superman, what’s that make him?
Atom: The Flash.

I…I’m not choked up. I just have something in my eye…

Welcome to Fanaticon.org!

image

Welcome!
There’s never been a better time to be a comic book fan! Comic books are fueling all aspects of popular entertainment, from movies and TV to art and fashion. Whether viewed as mass entertainment or pop culture lightning rod, comic books and comic book culture have come into their own as an art form.

On Saturday, May 15, 2010, beautiful downtown Asheville, NC will play host to FANATICON, a premiere celebration of comic book culture and its fans. The event will take place at the Asheville Art Museum and will feature local comic book vendors, artists, panel discussions and special guests.

We are currently hard at work lining up special guests and exciting programming for the event. We will announce these here at FANATICON.org as they are confirmed.
